Summer can be a wonderful time to soak up the warm rays of the sun, celebrate with friends and enjoy a more active lifestyle that has you on the go. However those very hot days, fast foods, traditional picnic faire and alcoholic beverages with an activating fast-paced schedule can create excess heat that leads to stagnation in the liver. A congested liver can lower the quality of life and lead to digestive and hormonal imbalances as well as emotional and anger challenges. Both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda attribute liver congestion to heat that is trapped in the liver. It is imperative that one seek to clear and cool this vital organ through lifestyle changes and herbal allies and healing food choices. Here is a simple liver tonic that I have found to be very helpful through this Season.

As with all of the recipes posted i encourage you to feel into it and make modifications accordingly. Also note that as the Seasons weather becomes cooler you will want to adjust the tonic.  And as your personal state of being shifts you will find that your morning concoction will naturally change.

This tonic like many of the recipes posted contains the 6 tastes which have a long term effect on our metabolism and are a key to creating balance to our vital tissues. Here is a breakdown of the ingredients their tastes and benefits so you can cultivate a deeper understanding.

Aloe – bitter and astringent with cooling qualities, considered an effective purgative and cleansing agent for the liver and has a mild laxative effect.

Lemon- Sour is heating however improves digestion and elimination and is alkalizing to the system.

Coconut Water – Sweet and cooling enhances hydration and a good source of electrolytes.

Real Salt – Salt can be heating however is rich in minerals, softens tissues promotes electrolyte balance and grounding and has a mild laxative effect.

Turmeric –  pungent and bitter has heating and cooling effects, stimulates blood circulation, supports balanced blood sugar and in small amounts gently purifies and cleanses the body.

Note: Lakewood is Organic aloe and has no preservatives. it comes in two forms pure aloe and inner leaf juice which has stronger effects. Aloe has purgatives that are essential in order to efficiently clean up a toxic liver and to do so the bowels need to move – otherwise toxins get reabsorbed. Choose according to your needs and adjust the quantities to sustain a gentle balancing effect.
